Hijapedia is array of sites consist of News, Store1 , and Forum2 for muslimah developed on top of WordPress Multisite. I was hired as freelance in late 2013 to lead its redesign as project manager3 and theme developer. Here’s how the redesign looks like:
The project went great and after I decided not to extend my contract with DMD BINUS for another year and move back to my Bandung, I was hired as remote WordPress theme and plugin developer for Hijapedia. Months after my employment, I analyze the site’s traffic and realize that mobile traffic has surpassed desktop traffic. Hence I pitched my employer to optimize the site by doing another redesign, this time using mobile first approach4 to make the UX of the site better for majority of visitors whom visit our site using mobile device.
My employer agreed. This time I was wearing the designer + developer hats. We’re using existing color scheme, existing IA structure, but optimizing the UI and UX using mobile first approach. After months of redesign process, this they how it look like:
Hijapedia News – Homepage (Recent Posts section). It is adjusted to the possible use case: swiping is okay on mobile device while skimming is preferable on desktop
Besides remote working benefit and opportunity to make customized WordPress experience, another great thing about working at Hijapedia is open-mindedness of the employer. I pitched him to open source many of our custom plugins5, and he agrees. Many plugins6 available at my github account are courtesy of Hijapedia.
Digital-Media Development (DMD) Division of BINUS University is a brand new division at BINUS University which aims to level up the digital experience of BINUS University starting from the web and design standpoint.
I was very lucky to be employed as front-end and WordPress theme developer from December 2011 to May 2014 (2 years and 6 months). It could be divided into two phases:
December 2011 – April 2013 as full-time remote employee due to my status as university student and freelancer. This is the compromise we agreed upon due to my commitment to complete my bachelor degree. Basically I worked after the campus hour, and once in a week I came to the office for weekly meeting (I live in Bandung and BINUS University is in Jakarta. It took three to five hours to commute)
May 2013 – May 2014 as full-time on-site employee after I graduated from English Education department of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (Indonesia University of Education)1
While working there, I managed to develop lots of WordPress themes, WordPress plugins, front-end components, and even a Phonegap-based iPhone app for various BINUS University’s faculties and divisions. Some of the works can be accessed and showcased publicly while some other works cannot be showcased publicly. Some of the works that can be accessed publicly are listed below:
DISCLAIMER: All of the works listed below are assigned to me while I was employee at BINUS. They are owned by BINUS University.
BINUS.ac.id (2011 Edition)
One of my first task at DMD BINUS was creating a theme that will be used for BINUS.ac.id, BINUS University’s official site. This was how it looked:
This theme is no longer used due to 2012 redesign.
Child Themes for Departments
One of the goals of DMD’s first year was migrating various faculties’ and divisions’ sub-sites which was built using in-house CMS into WordPress powered sites. The reason of this migration was to give those sub-sites a more well-designed appearance.
To do so, we created a parent site derived from BINUS.ac.id and built many child-themes with various homepages to cater many faculties and divisions unique needs. My role in this project was creating the child themes based on the design made by DMD designers.

DMD Ticket is WordPress based ticketing system. This solution was built to centralize all frequently asked questions and support ticket submission for DMD.
BINUS Curriculum is website specifically developed for publishing all BINUS University’s curriculum and course details. What makes this project interesting was every course information should be embeddable for departments’ sub-sites through WordPress shortcode. My role in this project was developing the theme for BINUS Curriculum and its shortcode mechanism for department’s sub-sites.
Teach for Indonesia is BINUS University’s community program which concerns in community building issues. Design wise, Teach for Indonesia’s site employed a one page site design. My role in this project was developing WordPress theme based on the design made by DMD designers.
BINUS School Simprug and BINUS School Serpong are elementary, intermediate, and high school that are managed by BINA Nusantara Foundation (foundation behind BINUS University) using international standard and curriculum. DMD was assigned to redesign the website of both schools. My role in this project was to develop the design into custom WordPress Theme.
