It should be easy, right?

  1. Export your WordPress.com blog’s content from Dashboard > Tools > Export
  2. Import it to your WordPress.org installation from Dashboard > Tools > Import

Sadly, it wasn’t that easy. I tried the approach I mentioned above and It kept failing (which I still don’t get it) until I read this workaround, courtesy of Toby Dawes. Honestly, I still don’t get why this works either but these are what you need to do:

  1. Export your WordPress.com blog’s content from Dashboard > Tools > Export – pretty much the same
  2. Compress the .xml export file into gzip file type. I’m using OSX and I’m using GUI Tar to achieve this. If you’re using Windows, you may probably try 7zip
  3. Import it to your WordPress.org installation from Dashboard > Tools > Import – pretty much the same

Now you’re good to go.
